The ICLAC Millennium Nucleus researcher and UC Communications academic, Claudia Labarca, recently participated in the BRICS Media and Think Tank Forum , an event that took place in Rio de Janeiro and brought together more than 250 representatives from 36 countries.
The forum was the framework for the launch of the "BRICS Initiative for Cooperation and Development in Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Media and Research Centers". The conference focused on how countries can contribute to the new world order sought to be promoted through BRICS. One of the central themes was artificial intelligence, with the presentation of various case studies from the global south, including applications in medicine and finance.
For researcher Claudia Labarca, the event represented a valuable opportunity to hear perspectives from countries that "don't always have the same voice in international and national media as larger countries or European countries". The academic highlighted the importance of observing not only the vision of countries that belong to BRICS, but also other developing countries.
Labarca highlighted how "the speeches at the forum emphasized that, by being united, these countries can exercise greater geopolitical influence, led by China, and function as an engine of economic development".
Regarding the role of AI, it was discussed how countries like Chile can contribute. Although the country does not have great technological development like other nations, the need to promote culture and literacy in AI in different areas, such as companies, universities, and schools, has been raised. Additionally, a call was made to the State and companies to develop artificial intelligence projects, especially in key sectors such as mining, agriculture, and viticulture.
The Chilean delegation was composed of Claudia LabarcaICLAC researcher Carlos Ominami, president of Chile 21 Foundation, and Fabián Pizarro, executive director of China Effect, Radio Cooperativa.
