Between February 17th and 21st, Carol Chan, alternate director of the Millennium Nucleus ICLAC and faculty member at Universidad Diego Portales, Carol Chancarried out a series of academic activities in Madrid aimed at strengthening collaboration in Asian studies. The visit, also linked to her Fondecyt project "Tracing the Chilean Asian," included presentations at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) and the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM).
At the UAM, under the coordination of Professor Mario Rodríguez, director of the Center for East Asian Studies, the researcher delivered the talk "The Refraction and Multiplication of Chinese Alterity in the Processes of Sinicization and Migration in Chile", in which postgraduate students and faculty from the center participated. Subsequently, at the UCM, the researcher was received by Professor Consuelo Martínez, director of the East Asian Studies area, to participate in the center's Permanent Seminar with the talk “La inmigración china en Chile” y que incluyó la exhibición del corto de ciencia ficción ICLAC, “The Journey of Guan Gong", before an audience of faculty and undergraduate students.
The agenda also included a visit to the neighborhood Usera, the area with the largest Chinese community presence in Madrid. Accompanied by anthropologist Gladys Nieto (UAM), Chan toured the area during the Chinese New Year celebrations. As part of the observation of the surroundings, the close collaboration between the local Chinese community and the Usera municipality to organize activities and celebrations for the public and families was highlighted.
