Between March 14 and 17, ICLAC associate researcher Carol Chan and ICLAC postdoctoral researcher José Miguel Vidal participated in the Annual Conference of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS), which was held in Seattle, United States.
The event had the participation of more than 3,000 participants, including students and exhibitors, in addition to hundreds of sessions and events.
Researcher Carol Chan participated in the event by presenting the book “Connecting China, Latin America and the Caribbean: Infrastructure and Everyday Life”, published by the University of Pittsburgh. The chapter of the book written by Carol has the title “Diverse and Shifting Everyday Experiences of China in Chile”, and deals with the impact of Chinese migration and the establishment of so-called ‘Chinese malls’ in the Meiggs neighborhood and other small cities in Chile.
For his part, José Miguel Vidal participated in the panel “The East Asian Eye on Latin America” with the presentation “A New Region for the Conversion of China: Latin America, Indirect Evangelism, and Protestant Chinese – Language Writings, 1819 -c.1860”, which analyzes the information and texts written by Protestant missionaries in China during the 19th century that addressed the political and religious context of the interaction at that time between the British Empire, the United States and China, in addition to their views on Latin America.
