ICLAC Visiting Researcher Participates in International Colloquium on Chile and Global Conflicts

Lucas Maubert, visiting researcher at the ICLAC Millennium Nucleus, participated in the colloquium "Chile and local, regional and global conflicts (19th–21st centuries)", co-organized by the University of Paris 8 and the University of Paris Nanterre, in France, on June 5 and 6.

Maubert's presentation, titled "Chile and the War Conflicts in the Far East Asia during the first half of the 20th century (1904-1943)", addressed the Chilean perception of war conflicts in Far East Asia, from the Russo-Japanese war (1904-1905) to World War II.

During his presentation, the researcher analyzed the actions of Chilean diplomacy in relation to the repercussions of these conflicts on saltpeter penetration, commercial relations with China and Japan, and the competition for political hegemony in the Pacific basin. The exposition focused on how successive conflicts in the region challenged Chile's economic and political interests in the Pacific area and how World War II, in 1943, ended Chile's diplomatic neutrality position towards extra-American conflicts.

This meeting aimed to consider conflict in its complexity, analyzing the characteristics of the actors involved and the levels of conflict in Chile's history between the 19th and 21st centuries. The event proposed a look at conflict in Chile's contemporary history, examining the relationship between antagonism, solidarity, and resolution, and providing a critical dimension to the notion of agency.
