The Latin American Journal of Asia Studies (LAJAS), in collaboration with ICLAC, invites submissions of academic articles for its special issue titled “China in Latin America: Impacts, Perceptions, and Transpacific Dynamics from Multiple Perspectives”. This special issue seeks to gather original contributions from researchers affiliated with and unaffiliated from ICLAC, including doctoral students, recent PhDs, postdoctoral researchers, professors, and other academics or professionals. The aim is to showcase ongoing research and original contributions on China’s presence and influence in Latin America. The call is also open to other scholars and professionals whose research directly engages with these thematic areas.

LAJAS is an academic publication of the Institute of International Studies (IEI) at the University of Chile, one of the oldest interdisciplinary graduate centers in Latin America, recognized for leadership in research, teaching, and analysis in political science, international relations, law, and international economics. The journal operates under an open-access model, providing free online access to all published articles.
Concept Note
Over the past two decades, China has consolidated its position as one of Latin America’s principal economic and political partners, generating profound transformations that extend beyond trade and investment. Its presence has impacted areas such as governance, political and economic elites, social perceptions, academic cooperation, sustainability, culture, and international relations. This special issue seeks contributions analyzing China’s impacts in Latin America from multiple disciplinary and methodological approaches, including but not limited to:
– Political, economic, social, and cultural impacts of China in Latin America
– Perceptions of elites and public and private actors regarding China
– China–Latin America academic, scientific, and cultural cooperation
– China, sustainable development, ESG, and governance
– Philanthropy, soft power, and non-traditional instruments of influence
– Comparative studies and regional or sectoral analyses
– Latin America in China’s global strategy
Manuscript Submission
ICLAC-affiliated researchers are especially encouraged to submit their work.Deadline for submission: July 31st, 2026.
Editorial Guidelines
Maximum length: 7,000 words, including notes and references (Arial 11).
Abstract: maximum 250 words and up to five keywords.
Languages: Spanish or English (title and abstract in both languages).
Citation style: APA, latest edition.
Review process: double-blind peer review.

Dissemination and Academic Seminar
Articles published in this special issue will be presented at a hybrid academic seminar aimed at sharing research findings with the academic community and strengthening dissemination and interdisciplinary dialogue on China’s impacts in Latin America.
The seminar will be held in mid-January 2027 at the Institute of International Studies of the University of Chile, with both in-person and virtual participation.
