Adaptive China: ICLAC Researchers Participate in International Meeting in Peru with CECHAP and Carnegie

On November 11th, Millennium Nucleus ICLAC was present in Lima, Peru, to participate in the event “China adaptativa: conectando con las realidades locales en América Latina y el mundo”. The activity, organized by the Center for Studies on China and Asia-Pacific (CECHAP) of the University of the Pacific in collaboration with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, brought together local and international experts to analyze how the Asian giant adjusts its strategies to different contexts in the Global South.

The day was notable for its in-depth analysis of how interactions with China are transforming political, economic, and social dynamics in Latin America. The importance of overcoming traditional stereotypes and focusing research on local empirical evidence was discussed.

Our nucleus 's delegation was composed of researchers Francisco Urdinez, María Montt, Juliana González Jauregui, Giovannina Sutherland y Luciano Quispe. Likewise, the activity included the presence of our Senior Advisors, Monica DeHart and Cynthia Sanborn, also director of CECHAP and organizer of the meeting.

Strengthening of Institutional Relationship and New Collaborations

Taking advantage of the in-person opportunity in Lima, ICLAC researchers held a strategic meeting with authorities from the University of the Pacific and CECHAP to explore new forms of collaboration.

The meeting included the participation of Francisco Urdinez, ICLAC director, and María Montt, ICLAC researcher and UC Vice Rector for International Affairs. From the Peruvian institution, Gustavo Yamada, Vice Rector for Research; María José Guardia, Director of International Relations; and Cynthia Sanborn were present.

The main objective of the meeting was to consolidate the institutional relationship between the two centers. During the meeting, perspectives on joint initiatives were exchanged, and a shared interest was reaffirmed in continuing to expand research and analysis on China at the regional and subnational levels.
