On November 28, the ICLAC Associate Researcher, Professor at ORT University of Uruguay, and Doctoral student in Political Science at the UC, Diego Telias, presented the progress of his Doctoral Thesis entitled “Strategies towards a great power: Government alignment with China’s core interests” at the University of Warwick, United Kingdom.
The presentation addressed Telias' doctoral research that seeks to understand how countries have strategically positioned themselves with the rise and interests of China, and the factors that have influenced these decisions. Why have some government-imposed bans on Chinese companies in 5G bidding processes and others not? Why do some take opposing positions on allegations of human rights violations in Xinjiang? To elucidate these questions, the research makes a comparison between Chile and Uruguay in Latin America, and the Czech Republic and Hungary in Europe, in addition to analysis of official documents and interviews.
The researcher also visited University College of London to present in the course “Latin American Politics”, in addition to visits and meetings with academics from the Latin American Centre of the University of Oxford, the Department of Politics and International Relations of the Universidad de Cambridge, and the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London.
