Sustentarse ONG Presents Book on Chinese Investments in Chile

On Wednesday, June 5, Francisco Urdinez, Director of the ICLAC Millennium Nucleus, participated in the presentation of the book “China in Chile: Investments, Transparency, and Environmental Governance”, written by Maia Seeger, Executive Director of the ONG Sustentarse.

The event, organized by this NGO which aims to advocate for human rights, sustainable development, and good socio-environmental governance, also featured Diana Castro, Deputy Director of Sustainable Latin America (LAS in Spanish); Lucio Cuenca, Director of the Latin American Observatory of Socio-environmental Conflicts (OLCA in Spanish); and was attended by more than 30 people.

The book analyzes the impact of Chinese investments in Chile, focusing on the historical context of bilateral relations, trade and investments, and challenges related to transparency and environmental sustainability. The report highlights China's significant influence in Chilean strategic sectors such as energy and mining, examining issues related to transparency, socio-environmental conflicts, and labor rights, and offering recommendations for a more sustainable and transparent bilateral relationship.

During the presentation, our Director Urdinez remarked on Chinese investments and projects in the region, stating that “what is sometimes a major project for us is just another one within the vast portfolio of Chinese capital.”

The book is open-access and you can download it here
