The Journey of Guan Gong: a short film that explores the history and worship of a Chinese deity and the Asian diaspora

On Thursday, January 16th, at the Museum of Memory and Human Rights, the presentation of the short film "The Journey of Guan Gong" was held, a fiction story that addresses the figure of the Chinese deity Guan Gong and its influence on the history of Chinese migration in Latin America.

The activity was carried out as part of the External Environment Projection (PME) project of ANID's Millennium Scientific Initiative, led by Millennium Nucleus ICLAC, in collaboration with the National Museum of Natural History, regarding the exhibition held during 2023 at the MNHN, "The Journey of Guan Gong" where the wooden figure that arrived at the museum in 1882 was exhibited for the first time.

Attendees from various institutions and areas immersed themselves in an experience that connected culture, history, and diaspora, reflecting on how past migratory movements continue to leave traces in the present.

The event featured the participation of academics and specialists who enriched the dialogue and discussion around audiovisual production and the Chinese diaspora. Monica DeHart (Puget Sound University / Senior Advisor ICLAC), Javier Correa, Francisco Garrido (MNHN), and ICLAC researchers Carol Chan and María Montt participated as panelists during this meeting.

Digitization and 3D printing

This project also included the digitization and 3D printing of the Guan Gong figure in a reduced size, designed for illustrative use in talks directed at schools that will take place during this year. These activities aim to make known the Chinese diaspora in Latin America, fostering understanding of this historical and cultural fact among the youngest.

As Millennium Nucleus ICLAC, we invite you to explore the 3D model of Guan Gong available on the SketchLab, and to download this resource completely free.
