On April 28th, the 3rd Symposium on the Translation of Asian Cultures in Latin Americatook place, an interdisciplinary gathering organized by the UC Center for Asian Studies, in collaboration with the ICLAC Millennium Nucleus and Aladaa Chile. The event consolidated itself as a space for dialogue, research, and exchange around translation as a living bridge between Asia and the region, where reflections were offered from interdisciplinary perspectives on literature, visuality, music, cultural diplomacy, and corporeality.
The symposium opened with inaugural remarks from the Dean of the UC Faculty of History, Geography and Political Science, Valeria Palanza, and the Director of ICLAC and CEA UC, Francisco Urdinez.
The participation of ICLAC researchers and scholars was transversal throughout the entire symposium, contributing both through paper presentations and the moderation of various thematic panels. Panel 1 on Translation and Literature was moderated by ICLAC postdoctoral researcher Jessica Sequeira, who later presented in Panel 3 dedicated to sound studies, the paper: "Oceans of Sound: The Relevance of Anoushka Shankar's Sitar Performance in Chile. Nuestra investigadora Claudia Labarca Also participated in the symposium as moderator of Panel 4 on Translation and Cultural Diplomacy, in which research assistant Junzi Lan presented on the construction of political metaphors drawn from classical Chinese poetry in diplomatic discourse. Finally, in the panel dedicated to corporeality, the researcher María Elvira Ríos led the moderation of a session where visiting researcher Keke Wangpresented on the representation of Chinese women in the work of Chilean poets who visited the People's Republic of China between 1951 and 1964.
Launch of Saltamontes en el bambú
One of the central highlights of the event was the official presentation of the book Grasshoppers on Bamboo: Essays on the Translation of Asian Cultures in Latin America. This work is the fruit of a collaborative effort between Editorial Noctámbula, the UC Center for Asian Studies, the ICLAC Millennium Nucleus, and the Fondecyt Postdoctoral Grant 2025 N° 3250234.. The volume brings together a collection of essays proposing situated and critical ways of understanding and translating Asia from the Latin American reality..
Alongside this launch, the symposium also celebrated the presentation of the photobook “A Glimpse into Deeper China” by Miguel Sayago, which offered an intimate look at China through a conversation with Manuel Gárate Chateau and Olaya Sanfuentes.
