ICLAC researchers participate in Workshop on energy transition and the role of China

Researchers Johannes Rehner, Institute of Geography UC and Miguel Atienza, Faculty of Economics and Administration of UCN participated this March in the Workshop “Capitalizing on the New Climate Economy in the Americas”, organized by the Center for Studies on China and Asia Pacific (CECHAP) of the Universidad del Pacífico (Peru).

Rehner and Atienza presented their presentation “Fair energy transition and Chinese investment in Chile”, where they addressed the cases of lithium and copper, focusing on the possible impacts on value chains, towards the production of cathodes and batteries.

The project is carried out by the Universidad del Pacífico and financed by the Ford Foundation. It is expected to last one year and will cover the cases of Chile, Argentina, Colombia, and Peru.

“This project is about energy transition and critical minerals in Latin America and the Caribbean, and the role of China. We (as representatives of ICLAC) were invited to elaborate the case of Chile,” says Johannes Rehner.

The project is led by academic Cynthia Sanborn, director of CECHAP and Senior Advisor of ICLAC, together with Boston University and Peking University.
