On November 11 and 12, Luciano Quispe, an ICLAC thesis student and doctoral candidate in Political Science at UC, participated as a representative of the ICLAC Millennium Nucleus in the “Global South Media and Think Tank Forum.” The event took place in São Paulo and was organized by the Xinhua News Agency and the Empresa Brasil de Comunicação.
The activity brought together over 350 attendees from various parts of the Global South, representing more than 70 countries. Among them were prominent journalists and media directors, representatives of think tanks and academic research centers, members of civil society, and official delegates from various governments.
The conference, titled “Development and Revitalization: A New Journey for the Global South”, addressed the current challenges faced by media in the Global South, including limited access to quality information, the proliferation of fake news, and the effects of international conflicts. In response to these issues, participants advocated for collective action from the Global South to produce higher-quality news, emphasizing the human condition and promoting greater modernization and global coverage.
Throughout the two days, attendees shared experiences and established networks to strengthen ties between media, academia, and civil society. The event concluded with the presentation of the São Paulo Declaration, which recognizes the media and think tanks of the Global South as transformative forces for a new international order. The document calls on these institutions to remain committed to the ongoing and resolute promotion of the voices of the Global South.
