ICLAC Millennium Nucleus Launches Collaborative Podcast with Andrés Bello Foundation

On September 4, 2024, the first episode of the podcast "Café & Seda: China-Latam Connection, Volume Chile" was launched. This project was created by the Andrés Bello Foundation – Chinese-Latin American Research Center and produced with the participation of researchers from the Millennium Nucleus ICLAC.

The first episode is titled "China in Chilean Academia: Evolution and Particularities" and features Francisco Urdinez, Director of ICLAC, and María Montt, Associate Director of ICLAC, with the host Parsifal D’Sola Alvarado, Executive Director of the Fundación Andrés Bello.

In this inaugural episode, the researchers delve into how, from the 1990s to the present, Chile has developed an academic tradition of studies on Asia and China, highlighting the importance and necessity of studying the Asian country and its relationship with Latin America.

“Whereas before there was a feeling that China needed to be studied, now there is evidence that it must be studied because when you gather the data, you realize, for example, that there is not much knowledge about which Chinese companies are in Chile or about the bilateral relationship between Chile and China, which was established in 1970 but continued after the 1973 coup and persists to this day. On the one hand, there is much ignorance about China, which ICLAC highlights.”

The following episodes of the program will cover the historical migration of China to Chile with Patricia Palma and Lucas Maubert; the Chinese industry in Chile: the cases of lithium and salmon, with Johannes Rehner; and the perceptions of the Chilean elite about China, with Andrés Bórquez.
