Next Friday, March 15, the ICLAC 2024 Seminar “Strategic Look at China” will be held, an event organized by the ICLAC Millennium Nucleus whose objective is to address the relationship between the Asian giant and Latin America, with special emphasis on Chinese investments across the region.
During the event, the “Repository of Chinese Investments in Latin America” will be presented, an interactive map prepared by ICLAC together with The Dialogue (United States), and with the support of the Millennium Foundations of Data Institute and the Center for Studies on China and Asia Pacific from the Universidad del Pacífico (Peru), which georeferenced investments at the local level and studies in detail which investment projects have already been analyzed by academic institutions.
“It is a collective and transdisciplinary effort to develop a tool that did not exist. We hope to be able to understand the regional heterogeneities within the countries and to conduct a granular analysis of which are the most active Chinese actors in the region. We are faced with the need to be able to refine the analysis of public policies on how Latin American countries relate to Chinese actors”, says Francisco Urdinez, director of the ICLAC Millennium Nucleus.
The seminar also includes a round table with the participation of researchers Carol Wise (University of Southern California, USA), Evelyn Hu-DeHart (Brown University, USA), and Rhys Jenkins (University of East Anglia, United Kingdom), leading world experts in studies on China and Latin America.
The event will take place starting at 9:30 a.m. in the Auditorium of the Faculty of History, Geography, and Political Science of the Pontificia Universidad Católica Chile (San Joaquín Campus), it is free and open to the general public.
