The Chilean salmon farm and the Chinese presence

Authors: Rehner, J., Lorie, A. & Muñoz, F. (2023)

Abstract: China has promoted the expansion of marine resource use as a protein source to achieve its food security goals. However, due to environmental limitations, it needs to develop this expansion partially outside its territory. On the other hand, Chile has seen significant growth in its salmon farming industry, which has led to the dominance of larger companies, and in 2019, to the first major Chinese investment in salmon production in Chile. This case report outlines the context and characteristics of the sector and this transaction (Joyvio – Australis) to discuss the effects of salmon farming. It then summarizes environmental impacts and how these relate to significant financial risks and the current conflict between the investing company and the former owners of the acquired company. The report concludes with some reflections on technical approaches and conceptual frameworks for discussing the role of innovation in this sector and potential solutions.
