On May 26th, Millennium Nucleus ICLAC concluded its outstanding participation in the LASA Congress 2025 "Embodying Latinx América", held in San Francisco, United States (and virtually) on May 23rd, 24th, 25th, and 26th.
During the first day, the nucleus organized the panel "China's Impacts in Latin America: Interdisciplinary Dialogues", which brought together researchers from the nucleus and other centers. The session was organized by María Montt (ICLAC associate researcher), moderated by Juliana González Jauregui (ICLAC associate researcher), and commented by Cynthia Sanborn (ICLAC Senior Advisor). The following papers were presented:
– What is thought about China in Chile?, presented by Millennium Nucleus ICLAC director Francisco Urdinez
– State-business structural power dynamics: Chinese investments and environmental regulation in Chile, by Andrea Freites (ICLAC thesis student and UC Political Science Doctorate student)
– Places of origin and the development of Chinese local commerce zones in Lima, Peru, by Nifta Lau Ibarias (Universidad del Pacífico)
– A decade of international turbulence (2013–2022): the "United States factor" in Chinese academic literature on Sino-Latin American relations, by Antonio José Pagán Sánchez (Universidad del Pacífico)
On May 25, director Urdinez presented his book "Displacement: China’s economic weight and the erosion of US political influence in Latin America", with comments by Jorge Heine (Boston University) and Cynthia Sanborn (Universidad del Pacífico, Peru). The researcher also participated in the presentation of the book "The Non-Aligned World: Striking Out in an Era of Superpower Competition" by Jorge Heine, Carlos Fortin, and Carlos Ominami.
